Newfoundland Thrummed Mittens

Newfoundland Thrummed Mittens

MATERIALS

1 skein of Briggs & Little Heritage 2-ply
1 Wool Roving, this is usually purchased in a large ball and there is more than enough in one ball to make at least three pairs of mittens
Set of 3.25 mm double pointed needles and a set of 4 mm double pointed needles or whichever needles are required to produce the correct tension.

TENSION
20 sts = 4 inches (10 cm) in stocking stitch on larger needles.

Working With Wool Rovings
Pull off (do not cut) three 3 inch (7.5cm) sections of roving.
Twist the three strands together until it is about the same thickness as your yarn.

TO Make A THRUM
Insert a thrum into the body of the mitt every third stitch and every fourth round.

First Round: * Knit 2 sts. Insert the needle into the next st knit wise. Slip the folded thrum over the inserted needle
leaving the ends to the inside of the mitt. Wrap the knitting yarn around the inserted needle and beside the thrum.
Complete the stitch by pulling through the thrum and yarn together. Repeat from * to the end of the Round.
Second Round: *k2. Knit in back of the thrummed stitch and this will lock the stitch in place. Repeat from * to the end of the round.
Third Round: Knit
Fourth Round: *Make thrum stitch, knit 3 stitches* repeat from around.
Fifth Round: Knit around knitting in back of thrummed stitches
