Newfoundland Thrum Boot Slippers

Option: Add a strand of 3 ply sock yam to strengthen the sole.

SIZE:
Women's: 9 inch foot length
[Men's: 10 inch foot length] Changes for men's size in brackets

MATERIALS:
1 Skein Briggs & Little Tuffy
1 Skein Briggs & Little Counrty Roving
3.75 mm and 4.5 mm needles

STITCH GLOSSARY:

k1thm (knit 1 thrum): Insert right needle into next stitch knit wise. Wrap a 3 inch piece of thrum (2 strands of pencil roving) and the yarn around the right needle and knit one stitch (leaving the ends of the roving to the wrong side of the work).

p1tbl: purl the next stitch through the back loop. This stitch is used every time you purl a thrum stitch from the previous row to help lock in the fleece.

k2togtbl:knit the next 2 stitches together, through the back loop.

p2togtbl: purl the next 2 stitches together, through the back loop.

s11:slip one

yfwd:yarn forward

SOLE OF BOOT:

Using 3.75 mm needles, cast on 9 [11] stitches.
Row 1: (right side) knit
Row 2: knit
Row 3: k2, (k1thm, k1) 3 [4] times, k2
Row 4: purl (make sure that all thrum stitches are purled through back loop) Repeat these 4 rows 6 [7] times.

Next Row: knit, increasing one stitch at each end of the row. 11 [13] stitches.
Row 2: knit
Row 3: k3, (k1thrm, k1) 3 [4] times, k3
Row 4: purl
Row 5: knit, increasing one stitch at each end of row. 13 [15] stitches.
Row 6: knit
Row 7: k2 (k1thm, k1) 5 [6] tim
Row 8: purl
Rows 9 & 10: knit
Repeat these last 4 rows 5 [6] times.

TOE SHAPING:
Maintaining these 4 pattern rows, decrease 1 stitch at each end of the next and every alternate row until 5 [7] stitches remain. Cast off.

UPPER:
Using 4.5 mm needles, cast on 101 [113] stitches.
Rows 1-3: knit
Row 4: (right side) k2, (k1thm, k3) 24 [27] times, k1thm, k2
Row 5: purl
Row 6: k4 (k1thm, k3) 24 [27] times, k1 Row 7: purl
Repeat rows 4 to 7 once more.

NOTE that the established thrum pattern is to be continued through the upper until the shaping of the cuff.

Next Row:k44 [50], k2tog, place marker, k8, place marker, k2togtbl, *sI1, TURN, p2togtbl, purl 8, p2tog, s11, TURN, k2tog, knit 8, k2togtbl. Repeat from * once then knit to end of the row. 91 [103] stitches.

 Next Row: purl to 2 sts before marker, p2togtbl, purl 8, p2tog, *sI1, TURN, k2tog, knit 8, k2togtbl, s11, TURN, p2togtbl, purl 8, p2tog. Repeat from * once then purl to end of the row. 81 [93] stitches.
Next Row: knit to 2 stitches before marker, k2tog, knit 8, k2togtbl, *sI1, TURN, p2togtbl, purl 8, p2tog, s11, TURN, k2tog, knit 8, k2togtbl. Repeat from * once then knit to end of the row. 71 [83] stitches.
Next Row: purl to 2 stitches before marker, p2togtbl, purl 8, p2tog, * s11, TURN, k2tog, knit 8, k2togtbl, sI1,Tum, p2togtbl, purl 8, p2tog, purl to end of the row. 65 [77] stitches.
Next Row: knit to 2 stitches before marker, k2tog, knit 8 , k2togtbl, TURN, p2togtbl, purl 8, p2tog, s11, TURN, k2tog, knit 8, k2togtbl, knit to end of the row. 59 [71] stitches.
Next Row: purl to 2 stitches before marker, p2togtbl, purl 8, p2tog, *sI1, TURN, k2tog, knit 8, k2togtbl, s11, TURN, p2togtbl, purl 8, p2tog, purl to end of the row. 53 [65] stitches.

 BOOT CUFF: Do not use thrum for the rest of the boot. Work 4 rows in stocking stitch.

 Row 5: k1, * k2tog, yfwd. Repeat from * to last 2 sts, k2.

Row 6: purl

 Work 8 rows in stocking stitch. Cast off loosely in knitting to allow cuff to roll.

FINISHING: Sew sole to the cast on edge of the upper then join the seam at the back of the upper. Make a twisted cord and lace through the holes at the base of the cuff.
