Child's Picot-Edge Hat, Mittens and Scarf

To fit child 3 - 5 years

Materials: Patons Decor 

Hat and Mittens
Main Colour 1 ball
Contrast A 1 ball
Contrast B 1 ball
Contrast C 1 ball

Scarf 2 balls

4mm and 4.5 mm needles or size needed to obtain tension.
Tension: 20sts and 26 rows over 4" using 4.5mm needles.

Stripe Pat.
With A, beg with a knit row, work 2 rows st/st.
With MC, knit 1 row.
With B, purl 1 row.
With MC, knit 1 row.
With A, beg with a purl row, work 2 rows st/st.
With MC, purl 1 row.
With B, knit 1 row.
With MC, purl 1 row.
These 10 rows form Strip Pat. 

TO KNIT HAT: 
Front: With smaller needles and MC, cast on 47 sts. Beg with K row, work 4 rows in St/st. Next row (RS; forming fold line): *K2tog, yfon.* Rep bet *s to last st. K last st. Beg with P row, work 3 rows St/st. Change to larger needles. With C, work 2 rows St/st. With B, work 2 rows St/st, inc 3 sts evenly across last row — 50 sts. Next row: (RS): *With A, K2. With B, K2.* Rep bet *s to last 2 sts. With A, K2. Next row: *With A, P2. With B, P2.* Rep bet *s to last 2 sts. With A, P2. Next row: With B, K all sts, dec 3 sts evenly across row — 47 sts. With B, P 1 row. With C, work 2 rows St/st. Proceed in Stripe Pat until work from fold line measures 71/2", ending with P row. Next row: Keeping continuity of Stripe Pat, K4, then slip these 4 sts onto holder. Bind off next 39 sts. Knit rem 4 sts and slip them onto another holder.

 Back: Work same as Front.

 Ties: Keeping continuity of Stripe Pat, K4 from right holder of Front, then K4 from right holder of Back — 8 sts. Cont in Stripe Pat until Tie measures 12", ending with P row. Bind off. Rep from holders on opposite side of Hat.

 Finishing: Sew side, top and tie seams. Fold lower edge of hat to WS along fold line; sew inside hat.

 Pom-poms: Working with 1 strand each of MC, A and B, wrap yarn around 3 fingers about 50 times. Remove from fingers; tie another piece of yarn tightly around center. Cut all loops open. Trim yarn ends to form smooth pom-pom. Make 2 pom-poms in this manner. Sew to ends of ties.

 TO KNIT MITTENS:  

 Right mitten:
**With smaller needles and MC, cast on 27 sts. Beg with a knit row, work 4 rows St/st. Next row: (RS; forming fold line): *K2tog. yfon.* Rep bet *s to last st. K last st. Beg with a P row, work 3 rows St/st. With C, work 2 rows St/st. With B, work 2 rows St/st, inc 3 sts evenly across last row — 30 sts. Next row (RS): *With A, K2. With B, K2.* Rep bet *s to last 2 sts. With A, K2. Next row: *With A, P2. With B, P2.* Rep bet *s to last 2 sts. With A, P2. Next row: With B, K all sts, dec 2 sts evenly across row — 28 sts. With B, P 1 row. With C, work 2 rows St/st. Work in Stripe Pat for 4 rows.**

 Shaping thumb: Keeping continuity of Stripe Pat, work as follows: Row 1: K14, inc 1 st in each of next 2 sts. K to end of row. Row 2 and all even rows: P all sts. Row 3: K14, inc 1 st in next st, K2, inc 1 st in next st. K to end of row. Row 5: K14, inc 1 st in next st, K4, inc 1 st in next st. K to end of row. Keeping continuity of Stripe Pat, cont in this manner, having 2 sts more bet incs for thumb gusset every alt row until there are 36 sts on needle. P 1 row.

 Making thumb: Next row: K24. Turn. Cast on 1 st. P10, including cast-on st. Turn. Cast on 1 st. Working on these 11 sts, cont even in Stripe Pat for 11/4", ending with a P row. Next row: K1, *K2tog.* Rep bet *s to end of row. Break yarn, leaving a long tail. Draw end tightly through rem sts and fasten securely. Sew thumb seam. With RS of work facing, join appropriate yarn to last st on right-hand needle. Pick up and K 2 sts at base of thumb. K across sts on left-hand needle. Next row: P, working P2tog over the 2 picked-up sts at base of thumb — 28 sts. Cont even in Stripe Pat until mitten from fold line measures 61/2" ending with a P row.

 Shaping top of mitten: 1st row: K1, Sl1, K1, psso, K8, K2tog, K2, Sl1, K1, psso. K to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1 — 24 sts. Row 2 and all even rows: P all sts. Row 3: K1, Sl1, K1, psso, K6, K2tog, K2, Sl1, K1, psso. K to last 3 sts. K2tog, K1 — 20 sts. Row 5: K1, Sl1, K1, psso, K4, K2tog, K2, Sl1, K1, psso. K to last 3 sts. K2tog, K1 — 16 sts. Bind off purlways. Sew top and side seam.

 Left mitten:
Work from ** to ** same as for right mitten.

 Shaping thumb: Keeping continuity of Stripe Pat, work as follows: Row 1: K11, inc 1 st in each of next 2 sts. K to end of row. Row 2 and all even rows: P all sts. Row 3: K11, inc 1 st in next st, K2, inc 1 st in next st, K to end of row. Row 5: K11, inc 1 st in next st, K4, inc 1 st in next st, K to end of row. Keeping cont of Stripe Pat, cont in this manner, having 2 sts more bet incs for thumb gusset every alt row until there are 36 sts. P 1 row.

 Making thumb: Next row: K21. Turn. Cast on 1 st. P10, including cast-on st. Turn. Cast on 1 st. Work remainder of thumb same as for right mitten.

 Shaping top of mitten: Work same as for right mitten.

 TO KNIT SCARF:

 With larger needles and A, cast on 30 sts. ***Row 1 (RS): (K1, P1) twice. ( K2, P2) 5 times. K2, (P1, K1) twice. Row 2: (P1, K1) twice. (P2, K2) 5 times. P2, (K1, P1) twice. Rep these 2 rows 2 more times.*** Next row: (K1, P1) twice, K to last 4 sts, (K1, P1) twice. Next row: Cont in ribbing and St/st as established, until work measures 41 1/2" from beg, ending with RS facing. Rep bet ***s. Bind off in ribbing as established.

 Finishing: Make 6 pom-poms same as for hat. Sew 3 pom-poms to each end of scarf.
