Sizes 3.75 mm (U.S. 5) and 4 mm (U.S. 6) knitting needles or size needed to obtain tension. Sizes 3.75 mm (U.S. 5) and 4 mm (U.S. 6) circular knitting needles 24 ins [60 cm] long for Skirt. 2 st holders for Shell. ¾ inch [2 cm] wide elastic for Skirt.

TENSION
Shell and Skirt:
24 sts and 32 rows = 4 ins [10 cm] in stocking st with smaller needles.
Shawl: 22 sts and 30 rows = 4 ins [10 cm] in stocking st with larger needles.

INSTRUCTIONS
The instructions are written for smallest size. If changes are necessary for larger sizes the instructions will be written thus ( ).

Shawl
With larger needles, cast on 85 sts.
Work 7 rows in garter st (knit every row) noting first row is WS and inc 6 sts evenly across last row. 91 sts.

Proceed in lace pat as follows:
1st row: (RS). K1. K2tog. K2. yfwd. K1. *yfwd. K2. Sl1. K2tog. psso. K2. yfwd. K1. Rep from * to last 5 sts. yfwd. K2. Sl1. K1. psso. K1.
2nd row: Purl.
Rep last 2 rows for lace pat until Shawl from beg measures 71 ins [180.5 cm], ending with a purl row.
Work 7 rows in garter st. Cast off knitways (WS).

Skirt
With smaller circular needle, cast on 198 (214-230-262-278) sts. Join in rnd, placing a marker on first st (center back).
1st rnd: Purl.
2nd rnd: Knit.
Rep last 2 rnds twice more, then 1st rnd once, inc 10 sts evenly across last rnd. 208 (224-240-272-288) sts.

Change to larger needles and proceed in lace pat as follows:
1st rnd: (RS). *K1. yfwd. K2. Sl1. K2tog. psso. K2. yfwd. Rep from * around.
2nd rnd: Knit.
Rep last 2 rnds until work from beg measures 12½ ins [32 cm], ending on a 2nd rnd.

Change to smaller circular needle and cont in lace pat until work from beg measures 22 ins [56 cm] ending on a 2nd rnd.
Next rnd: *K11 (12-13-15-16). K2tog. Rep from * around. 195 (210-225-255-270) sts.

Waistband: Knit in rnds for 2 ins [5 cm]. Cast off. Fold waistband in half to WS and sew in position, leaving an opening at center back to insert elastic. Cut elastic to waist measurement and draw through waistband. Sew ends of elastic tog securely. Sew opening closed.

Shell
FRONT

**With smaller needles, cast on 94 (102-110-118-126-134) sts.
Work 7 rows in garter st (knit every row), noting first row is WS and inc 5 sts evenly across last row. 99 (107-115-123-131-139) sts.

Proceed in lace pat as follows:
1st row:
(RS). (K1. Sl1. K1. psso. K2. yfwd. K1) 0 (1-0-1-0-1) time. K2 (0-2-0-2-0). *yfwd. K2. Sl1. K2tog. psso. K2. yfwd. K1. Rep from * to last 1 (5-1-5-1-5) st(s). (yfwd. K2. K2tog) 0 (1-0-1-0-1) time. K1.
2nd row: Purl. These 2 rows form lace pat.**

Cont in lace pat until work from beg measures 12½ (12½-12½-12½-13-13½) ins [32 (32-32-32-33-34.5) cm], ending with a purl row.
Work Chart I until row 24 (22-20-20-16-16) of chart is complete, noting the following:
Chart notes: “Sl1. K2tog. psso.” can only be worked when yfwd is worked 2 sts before it and 2 sts after it.
During armhole shaping, work Sl1. K1. psso in place of Sl1. K2tog. psso when there is no yfwd worked before.
Count number of sts when working each purl row during shaping to ensure accuracy.

Shape armholes: Keeping cont of Chart I, cast off 8 (9-10-12-13-15) sts beg next 2 rows. 83 (89-95-99-105-109) sts.

Sizes XL and 2XL only: Dec 1 st each end of needle on next (5-7) rows. 95 sts.
Work 1 row even.

All Sizes: Dec 1 st each end of needle on next and following alt rows until there are 67 (69-73-75-77-79) sts.
Cont even working chart until row 58 of chart is complete.

Shape neck: Next row: (RS). Work Chart I across 21 (22-24-25-26-27) sts (neck edge). Turn. Leave rem sts on a spare needle.
Keeping cont of chart, dec 1 st at neck edge on next 6 rows, then on following alt rows 5 (5-6-6-7-7) times. 10 (11-12-13-13-14) sts.
Work 5 (5-3-3-1-1) row(s) even from chart. Cast off.

With RS of work facing, slip next 25 sts onto a st holder. Join yarn to rem sts and work Chart I to end of row.
Keeping cont of chart, dec 1 st at neck edge on next 6 rows, then on following alt rows 5 (5-6-6-7-7) times. 10 (11-12-13-13-14) sts.
Work 5 (5-3-3-1-1) row(s) even from chart. Cast off.

BACK
Work from ** to ** as given for Front.
Proceed in lace pat as given for Front until work from beg measures same length as Front to beg of armhole shaping, ending with a purl row.

Shape armholes: Keeping cont of pat, cast off 8 (9-10-12-13-15) sts beg next 2 rows. 83 (89-95-99-105-109) sts.

Sizes XL and 2XL only: Dec 1 st each end of needle on next (5-7) rows. 95 sts.
Work 1 row even.

All Sizes: Dec 1 st each end of needle on next and following alt rows until there are 67 (69-73-75-77-79) sts.
Cont even in pat until armhole measures 8 rows less than Front to shoulder, ending with a purl row.

Shape neck: Next row: (RS). Pat across 15 (16-17-18-18-19) sts (neck edge). Turn. Leave rem sts on a spare needle.
Dec 1 st at neck edge on next 5 rows. 10 (11-12-13-13-14) sts.
Work 2 rows even. Cast off.

With RS of work facing, slip next 37 (37-39-39-41-41) sts onto a st holder. Join yarn to rem sts and pat to end of row.
Dec 1 st at neck edge on next 5 rows. 10 (11-12-13-13-14) sts.
Work 2 rows even. Cast off.

FINISHING
Pin garment pieces to measurement. Cover with damp cloth, leaving cloth to dry.

Neckband: Sew right shoulder seam. With RS facing and smaller needles, pick up and knit 19 sts down left front neck edge. K25 from front st holder, dec 3 sts evenly across. Pick up and knit 19 sts up right front neck edge and 7 sts down right back neck edge. K37 (37-39-39-41-41) from back st holder, dec 5 sts evenly across. Pick up and knit 7 sts up left back neck edge. 106 (106-108-108-110-110) sts.
Work 6 rows garter st. Cast off knitways (WS).

Armbands: Sew left shoulder and neckband seam.
With RS facing and smaller needles, pick up and knit 86 (90-94-98-102-106) sts across armhole edge.
Work 6 rows garter st. Cast off knitways (WS).

Sew side and armband seams.
